 VCTsMar 11, 2011

We usually write about this time of year with our views on the current crop of VCT and EIS investments. These investments are of course fairly high cost vehicles investing in often tiny companies and returns have often been disappointing for investors.  It is an interesting period for this investment area at present; with banks still reluctant to lend, venture capitalists often have the pick of investment opportunities.

 Pension consultation, August 2010Sep 8, 2010

The Treasury have now released their consultation document, regarding an alternative approach to reforming existing pension allowances. This was covered in the Emergency Budget (please see our Email Alert of the 23rd June) and is an alternative to the complex Finance Act 2010 provisions restricting tax relief for high earners.

The Government will only proceed with this alternative if at least the same amount of revenue can be raised. If adopted, it will form part of the Finance Bill 2011, and will become effective from 6 April 2012.

 Emergency Budget - June 2010Jun 23, 2010

The Chancellor George Osborne delivered his emergency Budget on 22nd June 2010, within the 50 day timescale set when the coalition Government came to power. In order to 'balance the books', cuts to tax credits and housing benefit were announced as part of a wide range of welfare reforms. As expected the rate of VAT is to rise and those in the public sector will face a real terms pay cut by way of a pay freeze for two years for those being paid more than £21,000. In addition, a levy on Banks will be introduced in January 2011 in a move expected to generate around £2 billion of additional revenue.

Following changes in the recent Budget, a number of high earners with taxable earnings in excess of £150,000 could receive only basic rate tax relief (currently 20%) on pension contributions above £20,000, whilst facing the prospect of being subjected to higher rate tax (currently 40%) at the point of taking retirement income.

We have looked at pension contributions as a means for saving for retirement in comparison to ISA and UT/OEIC investments, for those affected by the rule changes.

The Chancellor delivered his budget on 22 April 2009, unusually in the start of this current tax year rather than towards the end of March. For those of our clients who earn above £100,000, and especially above £150,000, the proposed increase in income tax rates and changes to pension relief may have a significant impact on their financial strategy.  Capital Gains Tax Arbitrage Opportunities – Part 2 Jul 23, 2008
Our Email Alert last week outlined the potential to reduce the tax take on your investment portfolio from 40% to 18% as a result of the new flat rate capital gains tax. This rate change presents a further opportunity for those who have already suffered capital gains tax at 40%. If you have paid CGT at 40% in the past three years, you can now potentially reduce this rate to 18% by reinvesting the gain in a company qualifying for the Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS).

The differential between the new flat rate capital gains tax at 18% and income tax (for higher rate taxpayers) at 40% provides an opportunity to reduce the overall tax take on a portfolio. How? By re-weighting your portfolio to hold income-producing assets into tax sheltered wrappers (pensions/ISAs) and holding capital gains producing assets outside such tax shelters. Simple? Well, not quite that simple.
